Service-Learning at The Centre

Service Learning Project at The Centre with First Lady Ann Scott, Governor Rick Scott's wife.

As a part of the Training and Service-Learning (TSL) grant from the Department of Labor, Computer Mentors Group partners with The Centre to provide computer literacy classes to their clients who are unemployed or low-income.  A number of these clients who meet a specific criteria also receive a free computer to help them on their job searches or as they go back to school.

Our TSL participants lead these workshops two weeks out of each month.  As part of the Service-Learning experience, participants are responsible for training The Centre’s clients how to set up the computer; how to use Windows 7, including a lesson on file management; how to use Microsoft Word to create a resume; and using Excel to create a budget sheet.

On August 6th The Centre received a special guest, Governor Rick Scott’s wife, First Lady Ann Scott.  TSL participant Jean Flores was providing on-site training to their clients during her visit and was happy to have the opportunity to meet a prominent figure in the community.

Jean Flores has completed over 200 Service-Learning hours providing digital literacy training opportunities to the community and refurbishing computers for community give-aways.  He is currently working on earning his GED and plans to achieve his diploma by October.
