Ralph Smith, Founder and Executive Director

Hello again all,

And thank you once again for taking the time to read our newsletter.  The summer is quickly getting away from us but it’s been great thus far.  The youth summer camp is going well and I’d like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to Lauren Webber of Nitro Mobile Solutions who helped us arrange four (4) great field trips for the students.  They have visited WTTA, the Great 38 television station, Bayshore Solutions (Thanks Martin McCauley for showing us around and Kevin Hourigan and team for inviting us), and Hivelocity, and will visit with the development team at Nitro Mobile Solutions next week.  The youth have also had an opportunity to meet actual developers, whose footprints they are trying to follow in, like Taylor Wallace from WeVue.  Taylor spent an afternoon encouraging the youth as they considered which technology project that they would undertake.  He described considerations and the development process.  His talk inspired to youth to create a video about his presentation.

Also I’d like to do a “shout out” to Ralph Johnson of the Dream Center of Tampa Bay.  Ralph is allowing us to expand our STEM Corps High School Program into the fabulous facilities of the Dream Center.  We will host the program there one night per week starting in the very near future.  This will allow us to better recruit more students into the program and extend our reach.  The same is being contemplated with the University Area CDC where Dan Jurman is the executive Director, and we are also seeking other locations.

I also want to mention that this fall we are hosting a new program for Computer Mentors Group called KidsCode. It is exactly as it sounds, we will be teaching middle school kids to write computer code.  We’ve got some really unique ways of doing this and are aligning our training lessons to somewhat parallel the academic studies of the youth.  We will be launching this into a couple of charter schools this fall and will have much more to report to you in the coming months.

Thank you as always for your great support.  I need also to let you know that we’ve received a $15,000 match grant from Conn Memorial Foundation.  Each dollar donated to us from new or increased sources over the next several months will be matched by Conn Memorial Foundation.  So please, if you would help support this program by clicking on our “Donate Now” button, it will be very much appreciated.  You will be helping us to “Create Creators”.

Thank you,

Ralph Smith
