Big Summer For KidsCode Program

Big Summer For KidsCode Program

KidsCode, our newest program, is having a huge year.  It seems that lots of kids enjoy and want to learn coding, and lots of parents want to assist them.  KidsCode originated in late 2014 as a middle school feeder program for our traditional high school program and has become the organization’s largest program this summer, both in terms of number of youth served and program budget.  We have Children’s Board of Hillsborough County to thank for most of this growth, as well as many of the organizations they support.  In January we were one of eight (8) organizations to win a portion of the $1mil Uniting Grant – Children Are Ready to Learn, a middle school aged youth opportunity RFP.  Our goal for that grant was to serve 140 children between February and September 2016.  Children’s Board also executed a second grant opportunity for summer services for youth, and although we did not apply, several of our partners applied and ask for KidsCode services as a part of their grant application.  In fact, five of the 10 awarded agencies requested a KidsCode component to their programs.  Totaling it all up, we currently have 348 enrolled youth receiving training.  Children’s Board also assisted Computer Mentors with a Technical Assistance grant last year which allowed us to purchase mobile devices, tablets and laptops, to be able to take our training on the road.  We have put these to maximum use as we currently host training sessions as far west as S. St. Petersburg, as far east as Plant City, and as far south as Ruskin/Wimauma.  The kids, of course, are the big winners.  All the kids are creating animations and solving puzzles through programming, and the advanced kids are programming robots and drones.
