Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn issued a proclamation to Ralph Smith of CMG
On Tuesday April 1, 2014, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn issued a proclamation from the City of Tampa for National Service Day. April 1st has been set aside by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) as Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service. CNCS is a federal agency that engages more than 5 million Americans in service through its core programs — Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund — and leads President Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve. Mayor Buckhorn joined 1,760 other mayors around the country who participated in this year’s recognition day.
For his part, Mayor Buckhorn issued a proclamation honoring the efforts of Volunteer Florida, who is providing resources to two local organizations, Computer Mentors Group (CMG) and United Way Hands On Suncoast. Both organizations were BEST Skills Based Volunteer Program grant recipients. The two organizations will recruit a total of 300 local volunteers within the next six (6) months.
Computer Mentors Group plans to use these “Skills Based” volunteers in many different roles. They will serve as guest speakers, technology mentors, technology trainers, newsletter editors, computer lab assistants and more. Representatives from CMG are currently attending training provided by Volunteer Florida in Orlando Florida. There they are being assisted to develop a volunteer recruitment campaign along with a volunteer training program and procedures and policies for volunteers. CMG will also install a volunteer management system and is a staff position to lead the volunteer coordination effort.
This is the second straight initiative that Computer Mentors Group has participated in that was put on by CNCS. CMG was also a part of the 2014 MLK Day of Service Project which was hosted by Hillsborough Community College in January of this year. MLK Day of Service is another of the initiative supported by Corporation for National and Community Service.
