August 2015 Director’s Message
Well, summer is concluding and it’s time to get ready for back to school. Computer Mentors Group had a great summer. We hosted a STEM Corps High School Program Summer Computer Camp for teens, many of whom will continue into our regular program this fall. The youth made great strides and by the end of next week when camp concludes, will have completed a great informational video, a website, and a first release of a citizenship game phone app for American Now, the non-profit organization that assists people to achieve U. S. citizenship. American Now was selected as Computer Mentors’ summer camp client.
Additionally, this summer we partnered with the City of Tampa Recreation Department and the Hillsborough County Library to offer the KidsCode Program. One-hundred and twenty elementary and middle school-aged children got their first venture into computer programming, creating animations, telling stories, and creating games, all free of charge. The tools that were used also are free, making it easy for students to continue to play and practice at home. And with the help of the community, we will be able to offer the program to more children throughout the county. The funding used for the summer programs primarily came from a grant issued by the City of Tampa. Unfortunately, we were not winners of that grant for 2015-2016 fiscal year, so we are seeking other funding opportunities to continue this great program.
This fall, we will continue offering the evening/after-school program for teens in at least five locations including East Tampa, North Tampa, South Shore, John F. Germany Public Library (Downtown Library in “The Hive”), and the Brandon Recreation Center. For parents who would like to enroll their youth, this is the perfect time as we usually have turnover that will erase our waiting list at the beginning of each semester. Registration is online at http://computermentors.org/stem-corps-application-form/.
